The Genetics of Self-Incompatibility in Oenothera Organensis.

چکیده

ENOTHERA organensis is endemic to the Organ Mountains of 0 southern New Mexico where the entire population apparently consists of considerably less than one thousand individuak2 The morphology of the seeds indicates a relationship to members of the subgenus Oenothera (sometimes called Onagra), but the growth habit and ovule placentation resemble types belonging to the subgenus Raimannia (the Euoenothera of Engler and Prantl). Oenothera organensis has proved completely cross-sterile with five species of Raimannia. Hybrids with Oenothera species are obtained infrequently, and are almost completely sterile, resembling Oenothera-Raimannia hybrids. Oenothera organensis differs from both these subgenera in being completely self-sterile. The inheritance of self-incompatibilty in Oe. organensis proved to be of the Nicotiana type, governed by a series of multiple allelomorphs. Interest attaches not so much to the mode of inheritance as to the methods by which genetic analyses can be followed in this material.

Self-incompatibility system of Oenothera organensis for the detection of genetic effects at low radiation doses.

The self-incompatibility system of Oenothera organensis is used to analyze the frequency of S locus mutations induced by low doses (2.5-20 rad) of fast neutrons and x-rays. Th principles and methods of the screening system for detection of low dose effects have been presented. The results show that low doses induced significantly higher frequencies of seeds and seedlings than those produced spo...

Mutations of Self-Incompatibility Alleles in Trifolium Pratense and T. Repens.

HE existence of several allelomorphs at the S locus has been demonstrated in T Nicotiana spp. (EAST and YARNELL 1929), Veronica syriaca (LEHMANN 1926), Antirrhinum glutinosum ( GRUBER 1932), Trifolium pfatense (WILLIAMS 1939; and WILLIAMS and WILLIAMS 1947), Oenothera organensis (EMERSON 1939, 1940) and Trifolium repens (ATWOOD 1944). Plant genetics: Seeing selection in S allele sequences

The self-incompatibility (S) genes of flowering plants are, with the fungal incompatibility and mammalian major histocompatibility (MHC) loci, among the most highly polymorphic loci known. In Oenothera organensis, for example, 35 alleles have been detected [1] by laborious compatibility tests between plants of this endemic species, the total population size of which may not exceed 5000 [2]. Dif...

Oppositional Alleles Causing Cross-Incompatibility in Trifolium Repens.

N SEVERAL species in which cross-incompatibility is determined by I multiple oppositional alleles, different types of tests have shown that these series of alleles are very extensive. The test yielding the most decisive results and involving the fewest crosses consists of making all possible reciprocal combinations (that is, diallel crosses) between plants which have one S factor in common. Thi...

Linkage Relationship of Two Gametophytic Characters in Oenothera Organensis.

N THE gametophyte generation all genes are normally present in the I haploid state, and since the gene effects are not complicated by dominance, it is often possible to apply methods which cannot be used in the sporophyte, or diploid, geieration. In this connection, the method used in identifying crossovers between two genes effecting pollen tube growth in Oenothera organensis may be of interes...
